Eat This: BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Tacos at Tortilla Press Cantina

I’m pretty sure I’ve never had jackfruit before, but I kept hearing about how it’s a good, plant-based alternative to meat, especially as a vegan-friendly alternative to pulled pork and chicken.

Jackfruit has a mildly sweet flavor and a dense and fibrous “meaty” texture. While not packed with protein, it is very high in fiber. It’s also low carb and can be a vegan meat substitute for sweet or savory dishes.

It has become more popular as more and more restaurants are adding plant-based alternatives on their menus. One local restaurant offering a variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes is Tortilla Press Cantina.

On that menu, they offer BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Tacos. They slow cook the jackfruit and then pull it, like pulled pork, and add a peanut chipotle bbq sauce, cabbage slaw, and pickled red onions. Most of the flavor comes from the bbq sauce, but 3 tacos were quite filling. They are served with rice and beans.

If you’re looking for more plant-based options in South Jersey, check out these jackfruit tacos and the rest of the veggie menu at the Tortilla Press Cantina located at 7716 Maple Avenue in Merchantville, NJ.

New Menu Items at Silver Diner, Including Many Plant-Based Options

In honor of its 30th Anniversary, Silver Diner has once again reinvented what it means to be an American Diner.

The new menu features radical changes, including the introduction of 12 vegan, plant-based entrees and the return of five classic dishes by customer request.

Silver Diner still offers the usual classic diner items— burgers, shakes, pancakes and more —  but also has a growing number of calorie-conscious and healthy plant-based items.

Its chef-driven flexitarian menu features customizable classic and healthier choices that offer the highest quality, locally sourced ingredients available.

I sampled some of the new menu items tonight; they included:

Just Egg Benedict: Vegan scrambled “eggs,” smoky tempeh bacon, baby spinach, house-roasted tomatoes, vegan cheese sauce, sourdough toast.
Summer Watermelon & Carolina Shrimp Salad: Sustainable, wild-caught shrimp over greens, vine-ripe tomatoes, kalamata olives, quinoa, feta, basil, pomegranate seeds with a house-made citrus dressing.
Beyond Meat Meatballs with Cauliflower “Mac” & “Cheese”smoky tempeh bacon and house-roasted tomatoes over cauliflower, vegan cheese sauce, zucchini, and grilled asparagus.
Coconut Curry Tofu Skewers: Sambal-agave glazed tofu skewers with banh mi slaw and curry sauce on the side for dipping
Tofu Banh Mi: Sambal-agave glazed tofu, banh mi slaw, pickled ginger, vegan mayo, Ciabatta roll served with sweet potato fries.
Campfire Shake: Breyer’s Vanilla Ice Cream, graham crackers, marshmallow, chocolate pearls.
Churro Doughnuts Sundae: Fried Churro doughnuts, cinnamon sugar, vanilla ice cream, Nutella and raspberry drizzle, and sprinkles.

Everything was delicious! The curry sauce that comes with the tofu banh mi was addictive. I couldn’t get enough of it. The vegan eggs Benedict was a revelation – it had a lot of flavor and I truly didn’t feel like I missed the real thing.

I’m very excited about these new menu items and look forward to returning to enjoy them again. I highly recommend that you treat yourself to these tasty, healthier, plant-based dishes even if you’re not vegan. These meals are quite satisfying and flavorful, so you won’t feel like you’ve deprived yourself at all. And you won’t feel guilty about having dessert! 🙂

The Silver Diner is located at 2131 Route 38 across from the Cherry Hill Mall and next to the Kohl’s department store.

The Farmacy in Palmyra Introduces New Lunch

Run, don’t walk to The Farmacy to try their banging new lunch menu. The eatery located at 307 West Broad Street opened last year to much fanfare and business has been very strong ever since. Proprietors and chefs Ross and Danielle have perfected craveable, casual comfort food.

They recently revamped their lunch featuring many creative handhelds. This may be the lunch menu of your dreams. At least it is for me.

I enjoyed The VLT – a sandwich made with smoked tofu, heirloom tomato, gem lettuce, avocado spread on sourdough bread. The tofu had a mild smoky flavor and was firm on the outside, soft on the inside. It held together very well. The sandwich was served with their amazing hand-cut fries. I’m not vegan or vegetarian, but I do try to eat meatless meals as much as possible. I could only eat one half of the sandwich so I had the rest later. This sandwich truly satisfied.

The VLT

Since I was sitting at the counter, I snapped a couple pictures of other people’s dishes as they were waiting to be served to other guests.

Thanksgiving All Day

The Thanksgiving All Day is, you guessed it, Thanksgiving on a plate or in this case, a low bowl. Served open-faced because there is no way any roll could hold all of that deliciousness. Roasted turkey breast, herbed stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, and somewhere under there was a long roll. You better bring your appetite for this one!

Cuban Sandwich

The next time I go back, I am definitely going to get the “Say Hello to My Little Friend” Cuban Sandwich. This sandwich looked so amazing that I was kinda kicking myself for not getting it. Roasted pork shoulder, sliced ham, lacy Swiss, Jersey Gina’s pickles, and mustard on a soft long roll. Yeah, this is a sandwich I can be friends with.

Cozy Inside!

The Farmacy is one of my favorite new restaurants to open in South Jersey in the past year. I love what they’re doing there and highly recommend that you go if you haven’t checked them out already. If you love farm fresh comfort food, you’ll LOVE this restaurant.
