South Jersey Family Turns Passion into Business with Bear’s Burgers Food Truck

Bear’s Burgers is a true family-run operation, built on passion and a leap of faith. After nearly 21 years, Dan Zuggi stepped away from his corporate career in October 2025 to pursue his love of cooking full-time. Dan and his family decided to open a food truck, which is just now hitting the road and can be found on the food truck circuit and various South Jersey spots. His wife is a key part of the business operations while still maintaining a full-time career. Their two young daughters also play a role, jumping in to help when they’re not on the soccer field.

Launching the food truck took months of recipe development and behind-the-scenes planning. The brand is especially meaningful, inspired by the couple’s daughters and captured in its name and logo. Starting any food business right now is risky and takes courage, but they’re hoping to have a busy season since everybody likes burgers! The menu is streamlined with classic and whimsical riffs on the standard American smashed cheeseburger, fries, and desserts.

I spoke with Dan to learn the full story behind Bear’s Burgers. I’m sharing the interview verbatim below.

1) Who are the people behind Bear’s Burgers?

Bear’s Burgers is truly a family-run operation.

What started as a passion has turned into our full-time pursuit. I run the truck day-to-day, with my wife by my side during service and our two daughters jumping in to help whenever they’re not busy with sports. They’re both soccer players, so when they’re around, they bring the energy.

Before this, I spent nearly 21 years working in Operations Management for a large company. But outside of work, I was always in the kitchen cooking for my family, hosting holidays, and feeding just about anyone who walked through our door. It’s something I’ve always loved.

In October of 2025, I made the decision to step away from that career and go all in on this dream.

My wife, who plays a huge role in keeping everything running smoothly on the truck, also works full-time in the financial world. And our daughters, 11 and 7, are the reason behind it all. They push me to work harder every day and set an example of what it means to take a chance on something you believe in.

Bear’s Burgers isn’t just about great food, it’s about family, hard work, and building something of our own.

2) Why did you start a burger food truck? Do you have a background or experience in food service?

Honestly, my experience in the food industry doesn’t come from restaurants, it comes from years of cooking at home. A lot of trial and error, a lot of long nights in the kitchen, and a real passion for feeding people.

Cooking has always been a big part of my life. Whether it’s family dinners, holidays, or just having people over, I’ve always been the one behind the grill.

When it came time to turn that passion into something real, burgers, specifically smashburgers, just made sense.

It’s a simple product, but when it’s done right, it’s incredible. You don’t need anything fancy, just high-quality ingredients, the right technique, and consistency. That’s what we focus on every time we serve. Burgers are also something everyone can connect with. They’re familiar, but they can still be customized to fit anyone’s taste.

At the end of the day, we started Bear’s Burgers because we believe simple food, done right, brings people together.

3) What did it take to make your food truck dream a reality?

It all started with taking a risk.

Honestly, picking out the truck and equipment was the easy part. The hard part was having the courage to bet on myself and go all in on something uncertain.

I give a lot of credit to my wife, she believed in me and supported this vision 100% from the beginning, even during the moments when I had doubts. That kind of support made this possible.

From there, it was a lot of work behind the scenes. Months of testing recipes, refining techniques, and figuring out what truly worked and what didn’t. There was a lot of trial and error, and a LOT of burgers and fries eaten by friends and family along the way.

We’ve built our process around freshness and consistency. Everything we make in-house and it’s prepared the same day as each event. From the hand-cut fries and sauces to the ground beef and desserts, we focus on quality and doing things the right way.

While we don’t bake our own rolls, we source them from a top local bakery to make sure every part of the burger meets our standards. At the end of the day, this came to life through risk, hard work, and a commitment to doing things the right way every single time

4) We know the name and the theme. What is the vision?

The vision for Bear’s Burgers starts with our family.

Our youngest daughter, Claire, has always been our “Claire Bear,” and that naturally became part of the identity. Our oldest, Farrah, with her long blonde hair, always reminded us of a Goldilocks-type character, so the theme just came together in a way that felt personal and real.

Our logo reflects that. Baby Bear represents Claire, even down to the glasses, and the tall blonde girl serving burgers at the window is inspired by Farrah. It’s not just a design, it’s our story.

But the vision goes beyond the name and the look. I didn’t start this just to run a food truck or to create another source of income. I started this to build something that brings our family together. Something we can be part of, grow with, and enjoy along the way.

Of course, making a living matters, but what’s meant the most so far is the time we’ve been able to spend together. Working side by side, building something from the ground up, and creating memories while doing it. This isn’t just a business, it’s something we’re building as a family.

5) Where can we find Bear’s Burgers? I imagine you’ll be all over South Jersey at breweries, events, etc.

Right now, we’re new. We’re learning. Every event teaches us something. How much to prep, what sells out first, how to move a line faster, how to keep quality high even when it gets busy.

We will be a little bit everywhere in 2026. Since we are new to this industry we are wanting to learn anything and everything we can from our events. We will continue to do a little bit of it all and then sit down and it really makes sense for us to focus on moving forward in 2027. The response at all of our events has been beyond anything we could have imagined so far. Still sort of in that pinch myself phase.

I will mention that a few people were kind enough to give me a shot when I was emailing people like crazy way back in February. The response of “yes” we’d love to have you was like hitting the lottery for me. One who still continues to offer guidance and support has been Bob at Pine Tavern Distillery so I’d be remiss without mentioning his kind words and opportunity he provided.
