There’s something special about learning to grow food in your own backyard from someone who lives it every single day.
The second installment of Folks Farm’s Seed to Supper series “Bringing the Farm Home” invited guests beyond the garden gate and into the lush backyard oasis of local gardening expert Toni Farmer, where vegetables, herbs, flowers, and pollinator-friendly plants flourish in every corner. It was an evening that celebrated not only gardening, but also the joy of gathering around fresh, homegrown food.
For years, Toni has been helping families transform ordinary backyards into thriving edible landscapes. Her passion for sustainable gardening and teaching others how to grow their own food has inspired countless home gardeners throughout South Jersey.
During the intimate seminar, attendees explored Toni’s personal garden while learning practical techniques for creating productive growing spaces at home. From maximizing small gardens to companion planting, seasonal care, and cultivating healthy soil, Toni shared the tips and wisdom she’s gained through years of hands-on experience.
The setting couldn’t have been more fitting. Rather than simply talking about gardening, guests were immersed in a living example of what is possible when thoughtful planning and love for growing come together. Every bed, trellis, and pathway reflected Toni’s philosophy that gardens should be both beautiful and abundant.
Of course, the evening didn’t end in the garden.
Following the educational portion of the program, guests gathered for a thoughtfully prepared garden-to-table dinner prepared by Toni herself. The meal showcased fresh ingredients harvested directly from the garden, demonstrating just how rewarding it can be to grow your own food and bring it straight to the table.
The dinner perfectly embodied the spirit of Folks Farm’s Seed to Supper series—a celebration of local agriculture, education, and community. Each event is designed to connect people with individuals who are passionate about food, farming, and sustainable living while creating memorable shared experiences around the table.
Whether attendees arrived with years of gardening experience or were simply hoping to grow their first tomato plant, everyone left with new knowledge, fresh inspiration, and a deeper appreciation for the connection between the garden and the plate.
Seed to Supper continues to showcase the people who make South Jersey’s food community so unique, offering immersive experiences that go far beyond a traditional workshop. It’s an opportunity to learn directly from the farms, local experts, enjoy incredible food, and build meaningful connections with others who share a passion for fresh, local ingredients.
