I’m pretty sure I’ve never had jackfruit before, but I kept hearing about how it’s a good, plant-based alternative to meat, especially as a vegan-friendly alternative to pulled pork and chicken.
Jackfruit has a mildly sweet flavor and a dense and fibrous “meaty” texture. While not packed with protein, it is very high in fiber. It’s also low carb and can be a vegan meat substitute for sweet or savory dishes.
It has become more popular as more and more restaurants are adding plant-based alternatives on their menus. One local restaurant offering a variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes is Tortilla Press Cantina.

On that menu, they offer BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Tacos. They slow cook the jackfruit and then pull it, like pulled pork, and add a peanut chipotle bbq sauce, cabbage slaw, and pickled red onions. Most of the flavor comes from the bbq sauce, but 3 tacos were quite filling. They are served with rice and beans.
