There are many places to get donuts in South Jersey, but none are like Mama Buntz’s Donut Company at 421 Hurffville-Cross Keys Road in Sewell/Washington Township.
Mama Buntz’s opened in October 2017. Every month, new donut flavors are unveiled and featured. Usually, about 40 to 50 donuts are available on the menu at any given time, split between customer favorites (“standards”), seasonal, and specialty donuts. They also create unique holiday flavors and boxes for Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even sports-themed donuts and donuts for social causes.
What sets these donuts apart is that they are cake donuts made all day and then made to order for you. Cake donuts are crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. The base is a vanilla-style donut, and then it is finished with various creative and colorful toppings. Even better, none of these donuts are pre-made and sit in a case – they will be topped before your very eyes! 😋
Mama Buntz’s Donut Company was started by Tammy Buntz, the ‘Mama’ in Mama Buntz. Raised by her grandparents, she never had much growing up. She was shy and not very popular in school, and despite bullying at an early age, she always knew she would forge her path and create a life of happiness for herself. She was a military wife and mama for a long time, moving around all over, and became known for baking treats for family and friends.
After losing her husband at a young age, she decided to start her own business. When it came time to start the company, she knew she would do something she was good at and make people happy: baking! Everybody loves donuts, so she went into the donut business. Starting a business is not for the faint of heart! It’s risky, and there are many challenges. She had a lot of help from many friends, family, and loved ones who helped her start her business.
The donuts took off and became a hit, and now, seven years later, Mama Buntz Donut Company is an award-winning donut shop in South Jersey. Word of her donuts has gotten around, though, with customers coming from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, North Jersey, and beyond!
“One of the best things about running a small business is all the people I meet and get to know,” Tammy told South Jersey Food Scene. “That is the best blessing of running this business.”
The business consists of Tammy and her longtime employees Cheryl and Michele, who have been there with her for many years, dutifully making donuts six days per week. She also has a couple of part-time staff who assist with donut-making, prep, and cashiering.
This is the epitome of a small, woman-owned business. Why go to a corporate-owned donut shop when you can genuinely support a local business? Try Mama Buntz’s donuts. You’ll be glad you did!
One last thing! They also take custom donut orders for whatever occasion you are celebrating. If you have a design or theme in mind, share it with Mama Buntz, and they will make your donut dreams a reality!
