Just under 24 hours ago, the Max’s Seafood page received a quiet update. The page photo changed with a new logo for Pudge’s Pub. Initial reactions were not positive, to be expected. Max’s had been a staple in the Gloucester City community for years. Max’s was a beloved South Jersey seafood restaurant. Change is always hard.
When it announced just a couple of weeks ago that there were new owners, some folks assumed that it would remain Max’s. Sadly, that is not the case. With the change of logo on the page, came a new bio that exclaims, “New name, Same address — just better beer, better food & better times.
Award-winning cheesesteaks |
Ice-cold beer |
Good vibes.”
If you recognize the name Pudge’s, that’s because Pudge’s Steaks is a well-known name in the Philadelphia suburbs for cheesesteaks and hoagies. And with the bio stating “award-winning cheesesteaks” well it’s not rocket science to figure out that they will be offering cheesesteaks on the menu, among other things, along with a full-service bar. Sound familiar? Yeah, that’s what Lillo’s is also bringing to town, too. Cheesesteak wars, anyone?
But on a serious note, the new owners told me that the menu will still offer Max’s famous mussels, seafood classics, and crowd favorites—offered at price points that feel right for the neighborhood.
The vibe will be more laid-back and welcoming, leaning more into casual American comfort food and bar bites. There will be daily food specials, more domestic beers on tap, and even more TVs coming soon. The goal is simple: cater to everyone. Can’t argue with that, no?
Guests can also expect an extensive takeout menu supported by a dedicated pickup area, online ordering, and third-party delivery options.
Pudge’s Pub is owned by Mike and Barb Williams of Haddonfield (who no longer own any Pudge’s Steaks in PA – this is their only restaurant now), along with their son, Preston Williams, serving as the kitchen manager, and partner Chris Widell of Moorestown, who will be a driving force on the front of house.
The restaurant officially opens next Tuesday. Let’s give them a warm SJFS welcome and get the SJFS effect going there!
