About a year and a half ago, a Cherry Hill couple began an experimental journey making real sourdough bread in their own kitchen, instead of buying store-bought loaves. Once they began baking sourdough at home, it was a game-changer. As individuals with gluten intolerance, they realized they could still enjoy bread comfortably. Better bread at that.
At first, the couple experimented with simple recipes and various baking techniques, sharing their fresh loaves with friends and family. The enthusiastic reactions were immediate and impactful. Witnessing the delight on people’s faces when receiving a warm, homemade loaf inspired them to keep baking.
Baking sourdough evolved into more than just a hobby; it became a soothing, therapeutic escape from the demands of daily life. It brought them a sense of calm and purpose.
Before long, an idea began to take shape. What if this passion could be shared beyond their inner circle? That question led them to pursue a cottage license and to take the leap from home bakers to small-batch bread makers. And with that, True Crumb was born.
Individuals who obtain a Cottage Food Operator permit from the New Jersey Dept of Health are allowed to sell certain homemade foods that don’t require time or temperature control to remain safe directly to customers from their home kitchens.
Today, True Crumb produces carefully crafted, small-batch sourdough made with high-quality ingredients. The menu rotates regularly, offering a variety of flavorful options rooted in conventional sourdough methods. Each loaf is slow‑fermented and naturally leavened.
To date, their main specialty has been classic sourdough boules—round loaves with a crisp crust and chewy interior. They also offer pans of fresh focaccia bread, golden and airy with a vibrant, tangy flavor.
Orders open on Tuesdays via an order form and close on Thursdays, with Sunday pick-ups scheduled and communicated in advance on their Instagram and Facebook accounts.
SJFS eagerly accepted a round loaf of classic plain sourdough and rosemary-onion focaccia and can verify that these are the real deal. If you’re looking to try a new small-batch bread baker, give True Crumb a try. Follow them on their socials for more information.
