Since opening last July, Vanessa Wong and Ryan Slaven’s Wahine Wine Company and Fish & Whistle Market have brought a little taste of Philly down the shore, as the conjoined businesses in Ventnor are loaded with products normally found in Philadelphia, along with lots of natural wine, spirits, cocktails, and beer.
Now, Wong is hosting a string of “market days” this summer that she’s calling the Summer Love Series, which is kicking off (rain or shine) on Saturday, May 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The other markets will take place on Saturday, July 1, and Saturday, August 5. The two businesses are located next door to each other at 101 N. Dorset Avenue near the foot of the Dorset Avenue Bridge.
Each market will feature complimentary natural wine tastings from Wahine Wine Company, as well as free cheese and charcuterie tastings from Fish & Whistle Market between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additionally, there will be a selection of thoughtfully sourced high-quality seafood from Fishtown Seafood; homemade pasta bundles from Midnight Pasta, utilizing seafood from Fishtown Seafood, paired with natural wines from Wahine; small-batch baked goods from Beehive Bake Shop; and various local consumer packaged goods from Salt & Vinegar, featuring mostly woman and minority-owned businesses.
“Ever since opening in Fishtown, and more recently in Ventnor, one of our biggest goals is supporting local businesses,” said Wong. “Supporting other small, local, and minority and women owned businesses through my own shops is really important to me, and this series is a perfect way to continue to do just that. Our first summer in Ventnor was really incredible, and we’re looking to make this one even better.”
Wong’s plans for the summer go past the Summer Love Series, as she will be hosting a number of other events at her two Ventnor businesses, including Sadies by the Bay — a pizza popup with natural wine tastings and pairings on June 17, July 15, and July 22; “My Favorite Wine is Tequila” tastings on the first Fridays in June, July, and August; and natural wine & cheese tastings every Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.
