Some places don’t need flashy renovations, trendy menu items, or social media gimmicks to stay relevant. They simply keep doing what they’ve always done, and they do it so well.
That’s exactly what you’ll find at Somerdale Cold Cuts, the beloved neighborhood deli that has been serving the Somerdale and Magnolia area since 1976. With more than 50 years in business, this enduring South Jersey institution proves that sometimes the best sandwich is the one made exactly the way it’s always been.
I’ll admit something.
I’ve driven past Somerdale Cold Cuts countless times over the years on my way to somewhere else. You know how it goes—you see a place so often that it almost becomes part of the scenery. I finally decided to stop by recently for a sandwich.
And I’m glad I did.
Walking through the door feels like stepping back in time. This is about as old-school as a deli gets, and that’s part of its charm. It doesn’t feel manufactured or nostalgic for the sake of nostalgia. It’s authentic because it has simply stayed true to itself.
Ordering your sandwich is an experience all its own. You head toward the back counter, where a few friendly women greet you with a simple, “What would you like?” They walk you through your options, slice everything fresh, build your hoagie or sandwich to order, and then hand it off to the cashier once it’s finished.
No assembly-line process. No digital ordering kiosks. Just good people making good food.
Then comes the surprise for anyone visiting for the first time.
Somerdale Cold Cuts is CASH ONLY.
Fortunately, I had a $10 bill tucked away in my wallet. If you don’t, don’t panic—there’s an ATM right inside the store, so you can grab some cash before paying. It’s another reminder that this place hasn’t chased every modern convenience, and somehow that’s part of what makes it special.
The sandwich itself was exactly what you’d hope for from a neighborhood deli that’s survived for half a century: fresh rolls, quality meats, generous portions, and simple ingredients done right. No frills. Just a classic South Jersey sandwich made with care.
In an era where restaurants often come and go within a few years, reaching the 50-year mark is an incredible accomplishment. It takes loyal customers, consistency, and a commitment to quality that spans generations.
Congratulations to Somerdale Cold Cuts on more than five decades of serving South Jersey. Here’s to the next 50 years of fresh sandwiches, familiar faces, and reminding all of us that sometimes the places we’ve been driving past for years are worth pulling over for.
