The SJFS Effect

What began nearly seven years ago as a small Facebook group for South Jersey food lovers has grown into something far more impactful. Originally created as an online gathering place for people to share dining discoveries and favorite local spots, the community—now known simply as SJFS—has evolved into a powerful force for supporting the region’s food scene. It now boasts nearly 220,000 members!

As the group expanded, particularly during the pandemic, a clear mission emerged: not only to showcase great meals but also to actively support and celebrate local mom-and-pop restaurants and small businesses. With each new member came greater reach and greater potential to drive awareness for establishments that were struggling or simply not getting the attention needed to survive and thrive.

What is the SJFS Effect?

Over time, the results became impossible to ignore. Restaurants highlighted within the group began seeing immediate, measurable increases in visibility and foot traffic. In some cases, posts went viral, creating a surge of customers seemingly overnight. That phenomenon earned a name: “the SJFS effect”—a term used to describe the powerful, positive impact the community can have on local businesses in a short period of time.

While there’s no exact formula for triggering the SJFS effect, when it occurs, it benefits both businesses and the broader community. A single post can spark widespread excitement, prompt rapid word-of-mouth sharing, and tap into a sense of urgency fueled by FOMO (fear of missing out).

When something looks that good, people want to experience it for themselves—and local restaurants feel the difference almost immediately.

This phenomenon occurred again fairly recently, which made me realize the importance of documenting each instance as it happens. By doing so, we can reflect on the businesses our platform supports and better understand how these successes unfold so naturally. The goal isn’t self-congratulation, but rather to highlight the collective power we have to make a real, tangible impact. It’s a chance to celebrate both the local businesses and the community’s dedication to our shared mission—reminding us all of the positive change we’re creating together. It can make us all feel good about what we’re putting out into the world.

Happy Holidays and let’s keep the SJFS effect happening in 2026!
