Gloucester City’s Tooties Deli & Market Set to Reopen Under New Ownership

A longtime community favorite is getting a new lease on life. Tooties Deli & Market, which has been serving the neighborhood since the 1950s, closed its doors abruptly on August 1 after a decade under the ownership of Heather Wert.

The sudden closure left many residents concerned about the fate of the beloved deli, known for its hoagies, sandwiches, and old-school charm. But two Gloucester City natives have stepped in to keep the tradition alive.

Dave Smith, a lifelong Gloucester City resident who runs a landscaping business, and Mike Benner, who grew up in Gloucester City and now lives in Swedesboro, have purchased the deli with plans to reopen in September. It will now be known simply as Tooties Market.

“We just couldn’t see Tooties disappear,” Smith said. “It’s always been a part of this town.”

The new owners also confirmed that existing staff will remain employed, ensuring continuity for both workers and loyal customers.

For decades, Tooties has been more than just a corner deli—it’s been a staple gathering place for the community. Smith and Benner say they plan to honor that legacy while keeping the menu simple and true to its roots.

Opening date is Monday, September 1st.
