Are you ready for a new cheesesteak contender in the “Holy City?”
Gloucester City is about to get a brand-new destination for cheesesteaks as Irishtown Steaks prepares to open its doors at 155 S. Burlington Street. Behind the venture are co-owners David Murphy and William “Billy” Roach (of sauce/condiment company Fort Nassau Kitchen). Murphy comes with serious cheesesteak-making credentials, having spent many years working at Donkey’s in Camden and Brynn Bradley in Woodbury.
To start, Irishtown Steaks will specialize in high-quality ribeye cheesesteaks and chicken cheesesteaks, all served on rolls from Boaggio’s Bread, a well-regarded South Jersey bakery with headquarters in Gloucester City.
The rolls will feature black sesame seeds on the outside and there will be a limited amount of what they call “I Don’t Think We’re in Camden Anymore, Poppy” poppyseed LONG rolls available on Wednesdays. Each cheesesteak will automatically come with fully caramelized onions and Cooper Sharp American cheese.
The menu will also feature cheesesteak and chicken cheesesteak eggrolls along with Belgian-style fries, presented in a signature cardboard cone. Setting itself apart, the shop will steer clear of seed oils, instead opting for beef tallow for deep frying—bringing back a traditional method known for both flavor and crispness.
While the opening menu is streamlined, Murphy and Roach have growth plans. Fresh, hand-breaded chicken cutlet sandwiches and wings will join the lineup in the future. Plus, they are working out the details for other additions later down the road.
The space is currently in its final stages, with kitchen work and finishing touches scheduled to wrap up in October. Pending inspections, the team hopes to welcome its first customers by Halloween.
Once open, Irishtown Steaks will operate Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
With a commitment to high-quality ingredients and a thoughtful approach to one of Philadelphia and South Jersey’s most beloved foods, Irishtown Steaks will make its mark in Gloucester City’s food scene.
Stay tuned for more details when they become available.
