Restaurant 1793 in Merchantville Prepares for April Opening

April Update: Opens April 10th.

Merchantville’s dining scene is poised for an exciting addition with the upcoming opening of Restaurant 1793, a contemporary American tasting-menu restaurant set to debut this spring at 7 E. Park Ave. The intimate new concept, led by Chris Bennett, chef de cuisine at Collingswood’s highly regarded June BYOB, promises a refined yet approachable fine-dining experience.

Bennett has taken over the former Park Place Cafe, which is currently completely empty as he undertakes a full build-out of the space. When complete, Restaurant 1793 will feature a carefully curated six-course tasting menu highlighting seafood, handmade pastas, seasonal risottos, and a signature duck course that will remain a consistent menu centerpiece. The cuisine will reflect contemporary American cooking with thoughtful technique, balance, and restraint.

The restaurant’s name nods to history, and the interior design will lean into that sensibility. A former carpenter before pursuing a culinary career, Bennett is personally involved in shaping the space, envisioning it as an upscale library-style setting with dark woods, leather seating, and a warm, intimate ambiance. The goal is to deliver fine dining without stiffness or pretension.

Construction for Restaurant 1793 in Merchantville is underway

In addition to its tasting menu format, Restaurant 1793 plans to host special events on off days, offering diners unique experiences beyond the standard service nights. While the target opening is March, Bennett notes that the timeline depends on construction progress and other logistical factors common to a full renovation.

With an ambitious chef at the helm, a focused tasting-menu concept, and a cozy yet elevated atmosphere, Restaurant 1793 is shaping up to be a standout destination for food lovers in Merchantville and across South Jersey. More details, including an official opening date, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
