For the past several weeks, The Candy Jar by 1892 has been dropping hints on social media about a mysterious new location. The clues had fans guessing, but one of the latest Instagram teasers gave away just enough information for those paying close attention (like me!)
As soon as I recognized it, I did what any local journalist would do—I got in the car and drove over (I didn’t have to drive far haha). Sure enough… boom! The sign is up. It looks like Merchantville is officially getting its own Candy Jar at 19 S. Centre Street in Merchantville.
The Merchantville shop will become the third location for the beloved family-owned candy store, joining its existing locations in Collingswood and Bordentown. The business is owned by Jose Alban, Paula Alban Barone, and family, who have built a loyal following by combining nostalgic treats with beautifully curated gifts and a charming shopping experience.
The Candy Jar by 1892’s two existing locations have become a destination for anyone with a sweet tooth. Shelves are filled with classic candies that bring back childhood memories alongside modern favorites, chocolates, specialty sweets, seasonal gifts, and plenty of fun surprises. It’s the kind of place where kids are wide-eyed with excitement while adults happily rediscover the treats they grew up with.
Merchantville seems like a perfect fit for the growing business. Centre Street has become home to an eclectic mix of independent shops, restaurants, and boutiques, and The Candy Jar should fit right into the borough’s vibrant downtown, even though there is already a legendary candy shop in town. The more, the merrier, I say. Just don’t tell my dentist (who is around the corner on Park Ave, ironically).
An official opening date has not yet been announced, but with the signage now in place, it looks like the wait won’t be much longer. The owners are keeping mum on that date for now, but as soon as we know, of course, we’ll let you know. Neighbors are Da’Villa’s Creme and Cookies, who also expressed extreme excitement about the sweet news on their Instagram.
Rest assured, plenty of South Jersey candy lovers will be making a trip to Merchantville as soon as the doors open. Stay tuned!
