Happy National Hot Dog Day, everyone! Today, I’m shining a spotlight on The Hidden Dog in Haddonfield.
At first, the name might sound quirky, but once you discover its location, it all makes perfect sense.
Tucked away beneath Umile Trattoria at 211 Kings Highway, The Hidden Dog lives up to its name. A true hidden gem!
Even with plenty of signs, you could easily stroll past on Kings Highway and never realize the delicious secret waiting below. A hot dog speakeasy, if you will.
Sounds fun? Keep reading.
Haddonfield continues to buzz with culinary energy, so when siblings Matt and Meg McMahon dreamed up their hot dog haven, this lively town felt like the perfect home.
Rather than settle for an ordinary hot dog stand, they set out to create something truly unique—a hot dog experience you won’t find anywhere else in the region.
Classic hot dogs make an appearance, certainly, but it’s the European-style creations that steal the show.
Inspired by the streets of Paris, these hot dogs feature a grilled frankfurter nestled inside a hollowed, crusty baguette—a true French street food.
Every baguette is carefully scooped out and toasted from the inside out using a European Bread Warmer, a machine designed specifically for this delicious task.
There are several varieties of the Parisian dogs, and you can always build your own “show dog” – a classic all-beef hot dog served on a traditional bun.
Not feeling like a hot dog? Don’t worry, they have other things on the menu. Like their “shortie” sandwiches featuring meatballs and sausage-and-peppers. Sauces and many condiments are made in-house.
At first, locals wondered if this gourmet twist on the classic hot dog would win hearts. Nearly a year later, it’s clear the answer is yes.
Since opening last year as first-time restaurant owners, The Hidden Dog has gathered a devoted crowd. From die-hard hot dog fans to the simply curious, the McMahons keep busy serving up smiles.
They describe the experience of running The Hidden Dog as an incredible adventure, filled with hard work, learning, laughter, and countless meaningful family moments.
They’re also extremely proud to call Haddonfield home, citing the incredible support and encouragement they’ve received from locals and visitors who have come from beyond the area to try their humble eatery.
“The goal has always been to feed people, welcome them in like family, and help them create good memories,” Meg said proudly. Mission accomplished.
The Hidden Dog is excited to continue creating memories, serving guests, and growing alongside the community that has embraced it.
Congrats and continued best wishes to The Hidden Dog.
